Matsutake is Japanese word meaning Matsu-Pine and Take-Mushroom. These mushrooms are very popular amongst Japanese for its unique aroma. It’s an autumn season food for Japanese. These mushrooms have to grow wild and naturally and cannot be cultured like other mushrooms. Mountains at japan does bear these mushrooms but in very small quantity and so it is very highly prized going up to 1000us per kg and standing average at 500us per kg but the imported matsutake from China, Canada, Mexico and few other countries get in japan at much lower price ranging from 20us to 100us per kg depending on quality and season.

Matsutake in Bhutan is known as SANGAY SHAMU meaning Buddha or the enlightened Mushroom. It grows sparsely over the pine mountains of Bhutan at the altitude above 2800mts and below tree line. Its seasons usually begins on mid-July and ends on September. Genekha village under Thimphu district is the most popular producer of these mushrooms. The village is located at 40mins drive from Thimphu and it has one of the finest matsutake mushrooms. Bhutan began exporting matsutake to japan in early 90s and the market slowed down for Bhutan matsutake at japan after influx of Chinese matsutake.it picked again in 2016 and is doing at average now.
